james inauguration day flag

little girls makin flags

After they'd finished the Obama portraits, I gave them a copy of the American flag, and told them they could draw and paint their own flag or an intrepretation of the American flag.

Obama process

I cut a portrait of Obama into quarters and gave each child one, and a piece of canvas. I explained how to draw the portrait proportionally. (This is one of the kid's drawings.)

After they drew it, as realistically as they could, they could paint it any colors they wanted.

drawing with charcoal

I brought a number of objects for the kids to draw. They could use charcoal, oil pastels or watercolor pencils. Everyone really liked charcoal.

assembled still life

Once they drew a bunch of objects, they cut them out and assembled them into a still life. Some kids ended up writing stories about what they'd drawn.
