'what do you want to be when you grow up' puppets

Here's Tuesday's class of 8 working on puppets. The theme was decided by the kids, and they chose to make puppets that reflected what they wanted to be when they grew up. We'll finish the puppets next week, and do an inclass puppet show.

Thursday

Another holiday week, so we had a mix of Tuesday and Thursday kids for a total of 9 kids. We made little people Flat Pack Toy Design. First the kids made themselves, then some kids made one of their parents, or another person. One kid made a squirrel and the other a rabbit. It was a good lesson, since they learned to build 3-d objects.

Tree of Life

Since there was no class on Tuesday, I invited the Tuesday kids to join us on Thursday for class. We had 11 kids. We did one of my favorite lessons, inspired by Klimt, that I call the Tree of Life. I showed the kids images of Klimt's work, talked about patterns and color, and asked them to draw a tree, and fill it with pattern. We worked with oil pastels and watercolor.

Tuesday's kids! VIDEO!!

Eight kids today. The group broke out in spontaneous song! While we made boxes from paper and then collaged and decorated the outsides of the boxes. I encouraged the kids to make a gift certificate for some chore, or kindness, to gift as a gift to their parents and place inside the box.

Tuesday Self-Portrait Weavings

Eight kids in class today. First, everyone made a list of at least 16 things they liked. Some items on the list were: sleep, art, family, ice cream, animals, earth. Then I gave them strip of paper to illustrate each one of their likes a a strip of paper, to create 16 strips. At the end, they wove them together and glued it on to a sheet of construction paper.

Tuesday: Thankful

Eight kids today and the theme was Thankful. What are we thankful for? We went into the park, and each collected a leaf. Then, back to the classroom, where they drew the leaf and wrote one word that they were thankful for, and cut out the leaf. We put them in the window.
The other project was to create a little collaged house from paper, with images and drawings of things we're thankful for. For the roof, we created a little book, and many of the kids were going to use the house as a centerpiece for Thanksgiving, and have the guests write their memories in the little book.
