Tuesday's Class--Nature's Alphabet

Thirteen kids today. It was the first week of school, so this was our first true 'after school' session. Today's inspiration was the photography exhibit at ECM, Discovering Nature's Alphabet.
After looking at the photos, we went out into the garden to discover letters.

A kid spotted this beauty of an "O"

The kids are searching for letters in nature and then drawing them.

Nature's Alphabet

They found letters in the rocks and leaves.

They could also draw from photos of the Nature's Alphabet exhibition.

Nature's Alphabet

Each child made an accordian book and drew a 'nature's alphabet' letter spelling out "Mundo Lindo" and then added color with color pencil.

Tuesday Class. Profile Books

Thirteen kids today. We took a field trip (a 2 minute walk) to the nearby California Center for the Arts Escondido Museum to look at the 'Cultural Fusion' exhibition. Some of the kids had never been in an art museum before, so we discussed proper behavior and I explained some details of a museum. The museum closed at 4pm, so we went back to 'our studio' to work on a project inspired by what we'd seen there.

Profile Books

Sarah and I traced each child's profile onto a piece of paper, then using that profile, the kids cut out pages for their books.

Profile Books.

Profile Book

Using collage material from magazines, and color paper, pencils and pens, they decorated each page to portray something about themselves. I helped them bind the books with a simple accordian folded piece. This project was based on Slyvia Clark's handmade book on display at the California Center for the Arts Escondido Museum.

Tuesday's class

Twelve kids in class today. We talked about landscapes and distant views and how the mountains in the distance look grey.
Sarah joined us today as our new helper. Yea! She is the Visitor Services and Museum Educator at Escondido Children's Museum.
Sarah and Tricia, please, please leave comments on this blog! It means a lot to me that you are looking at it!

they each painted two landscapes

I taught them how to paint wet into wet and create a sunset sky.

And the other painting into horizontal strips

And wove them together to make one gorgeous peice of artwork!

august 4 reception

Our reception on Saturday was a wonderful success. A dozen kids brought family and friends. We displayed their artwork, they enjoyed delicious snacks (thank you Tricia!) and made paper butterflies, and of course, played. Victor and Nancy came, from the Picerne Foundation, thank you! I was too busy to get photos of all the families and kids, but here's our Mundo Lindo banner, and some of the kids artwork, including clay and papier mache figures on the table.
Our next 8-week session begins this week, with a reception planned for September 29.
