Adinkra

Even though it was pouring rain, we had 17 kids today! We did two different activities. First we cut up used brown paper grocery bags, wrinkled them and soaked them in water. During class, the kids came to a separate table and painted the bags with tempera paints. We'll dry them and use them for collage papers in the coming weeks.
The other project was based on West African Adinkra symbols. I had hand outs with about 30 different symbols, and each kid selected 4 symbols/traits they wanted to embody. They drew and painted them.

painting paper bags for collage

Messy fun and a great way to experiment with mixing colors. These will dry and be cut up later for collage.

Some kids knew each other, some just met in class today. All great kids, with a clear love of art.
