Mundo Lindo ~ Beautiful World.
Where kids discover the joy and power of creativity…
This blog chronicles a free after-school program for 4th & 5th grade kids in Escondido, California.
Small group today. There were parent/teacher conferences at school. That's my husband, Don, at the table. He came to help out. For this project, Repeated Shapes, I brought in a variety of leaves. The kids did some sketches of the leaves on scratch paper, and then chose one. Then, they drew it larger, on a piece of card stock, and cut it out to create a pattern. Next, using a ruler, on a large piece of watercolor paper, they created a 2 inch border. (Most kids at this age don't know how to measure with a ruler, so it's a good addition to the lesson.) Next, they trace the leaf pattern randomly on the page, outline everything with black permanent maker. Last, they paint the leaves and background with watercolor. It's a great project (if I do say so myself) and always successful.
She's helping her friend use the ruler. I love seeing this!
I even got to paint today!

ha! a passenger plane!
The beauty of this project is that any shape can be created and used. Below, Victor has created 2 different dinosaur shapes.
Mundo Lindo has started up again for the 2012-2013 school year. Twenty four kids came the first day. All 4th and 5th graders from Escondido public schools. I showed them how to draw a pumpkin, first in pencil, then outlining in marker. (I had them trace their own drawings onto another sheet of paper, for a second pumpkin drawing, filled with pattern.) Then paint in watercolor.
