Self portraits

I guide the kids to draw a large oval, and divide the face to get the proportions. Frida Kahlo was our inspiration, since she did so many self portraits.





We had some extra time, so I filled it up by teaching them to fold fortune tellers (known as cootie catchers back in my day.)

Lunch bags

Lunch bags were the project today! I got them from Discount School Supply.
I had the kids draw some design drawings on paper first, then onto plain flat canvas. Then they did the lunch bag using fabric markers from Tulip   donated by Pokey Bolton.



The kids come from different schools in San Diego, so it's great to observe them talking and making friends, while they make art.









Before class started I had help ironing the fabric.

And tracing and cutting the optional bird templates, that the kids could use or make their own designs.


 
With such a huge class (24 this time!) my husband and Janice have been volunteering to help me.

Papier Mache and drawing

Look at this group of happy kids! Wow! I was traveling the last two weeks, so Tomoko filled in to help the kids paint their papier mache stuff from the week before.

Then Amy Williams filled in for the other week. Looks like the kids did some cool drawings of Amy's collection of plastic animals.

Papier Mache

Papier Mache! Calaveras (Skulls for Day of the Dead) and Pumpkins, and one airplane.
(Here's a tutorial I put together on how to make the papier mache skulls.)

We had about 22 kids.



Our wonderful volunteer, Janice, advises on airplane building.









After they'd made their papier mache shapes, they drew and colored a picture, how how they planned to paint their object next week.
 


Then, since they finished early, and it was a gorgeous day, we made paper airplanes. Carlos is instructing Ashley on how to fold an airplane.

Pumpkins & Tiles

The kids drew pumpkins, on green construction paper, using chalk pastels. The paper was cut to 12x12" squares, and as they finished their pumpkins, I tacked them to the wall to form a 'quilt.' They also created the 6x6" 'tiles' drawing from mexican tiles, and using markers.










                 
Each kid drew two pumpkins, (and took one home)

I showed them how to divide the 6" paper into 4, using guidelines, and then drawing the repeating patter within the tile.








The kids had no school today (teacher parent conferences) so we had fewer kids than last week.
