Fall Leaves!

Small group today. There were parent/teacher conferences at school. That's my husband, Don, at the table. He came to help out.

For this project, Repeated Shapes, I brought in a variety of leaves. The kids did some sketches of the leaves on scratch paper, and then chose one. Then, they drew it larger, on a piece of card stock, and cut it out to create a pattern. Next, using a ruler, on a large piece of watercolor paper, they created a 2 inch border. (Most kids at this age don't know how to measure with a ruler, so it's a good addition to the lesson.) Next, they trace the leaf pattern randomly on the page, outline everything with black permanent maker. Last, they paint the leaves and background with watercolor. It's a great project (if I do say so myself) and always successful.

The beauty of this project is that any shape can be created and used. Below, Victor has created 2 different dinosaur shapes.
